B-doubles now carry more road freight than any other truck combination. Hard to believe but it is only 25 years since the first B-double was granted a permit in the Eastern States, the Murray Goulburn B-double. Just 24 months earlier, Western Australia had granted permits to two operators to carry shipping containers on B-doubles from Perth to Fremantle, the first B-doubles in Australia.

The first decade of B-doubles in Australia has been documented by the person widely called the “Father of B-doubles” in Australia, Bob Pearson.
The history comprises more than 100 pages, and details the introduction of B-doubles in all Australian States. Many historical photographs are included. Twelve months of research went into the history.

B-doubles: The First Decade in Australia
The history traces the years from 1979, when the first letter was written by Shell Australia requesting use of the so-called Canadian B-train. It covers the trip by the author to Canada to examine B-trains together with background to the first two short B-doubles given approval to cart containers in Western Australia. Progress with each successive year is chronicled, including:
- First B-double in Victoria and first longer than 17 metres in 1984;
- First B-double in South Australia;
- A trial of B-doubles in Queensland;
- The RoRVL study recommendations for uniform operational conditions;
- A demonstration run from Sydney to Canberra;
- A trial run around Melbourne;
- Trial operations in NSW;
- Full operations approved in Queensland;
- Interim guidelines approved in NSW;
- Major campaign against B-doubles in Melbourne newspapers;
- First B-double with a tri-axle at the rear;
- Transport Industry Taskforce activities in Victoria;
- Finally, trials and approval in Victoria, the last mainland State to permit B-doubles, in 1991.
The history includes quotes and anecdotes from influential people and outlines the media opposition of the day. Included are important historical industry articles.
